Local Entrepreneurs Change Music Recording
in Minnesota
MINNEAPOLIS, MN, Aug. 23, 2006 -
Two local entrepreneurs have changed music
recording in Minnesota. Mark Meikle and Aaron Green, lifelong
friends and Plymouth residents, have started Legacy Productions, a
new Minneapolis record label with a twist.
Traditionally, recording a professional CD
album cost thousands of dollars and took several days. Now,
musicians young and old across the Twin Cities can record for free
and make money selling their album.
Legacy does the work and pays the expenses of
producing the album and then splits profits from CD sales.
Forty-percent of profits for current fundraisers go back to the
organization.
Legacy secures recording rights to make sure
the CD is legal, records, and then mixes and masters the audio for
a professional sound. Legacy even takes photos at the recording
session and produces original artwork for the CD packaging. The
final product has a retro LP record design on the CD face and a
full-color insert with photos. The CD comes packaged in a
shrink-wrapped jewel case.
Legacy groups promote and sell their CDs as a
fundraiser. Legacy produces CDs in quantities sufficient to match
sales.
New this October, Legacy will offer in-studio
recordings starting as low as $195 for a demo CD. This way,
smaller groups and individuals can record without fundraising.
“We already meet hundreds of talented
musicians through our fundraising program. Our affordable studio
recording packages will help these talented individuals record
like superstars at a price they can afford” explains Meikle.
Meikle conceived of Legacy early in 2005. As
an assignment for his Entrepreneurship Professor (and now United
States Representative candidate) Alan R. Fine at the University of
Minnesota, Meikle interviewed John Dormanen, founder of Discount
Steel, a thirty-million-dollar steel business in Minneapolis.
After the interview, Meikle and Dormanen discussed the idea of
Legacy Productions. Dormanen was enthusiastic about the idea. He
offered to finance its startup with a $75,000 investment and join
on as a partner.
When Meikle told his close friend, Aaron
Green about Legacy, Green was excited. Green offered to leave his
salaried sales position to become a partner and act as Director of
Sales for Legacy Productions.
Legacy Productions has recorded dozens of
school, church, and community bands, orchestras, choirs, and
ensembles. Hear audio samples and buy CDs online at

Legacy plans to record 100 music groups in
2006 and to expand beyond Minnesota as early as 2008.
